For the easiest handoff, arrange a hotel pickup before flying. For more flexibility, request a car through Uber or Pathao after collecting your bags. The airport also lists car-rental services before the terminal exits, providing a fallback when an app or mobile connection fails.

The documented airport shuttle does not run directly to Gulshan or Banani. Services and pickup arrangements can change; this guide was checked on 30 October 2026.

Choose by situation

Your situation Practical option Main tradeoff
First visit, late arrival or no working mobile data Hotel-arranged car Price and waiting terms vary by hotel
Comfortable using an app and mobile data Uber or Pathao car You must find the assigned pickup point
App will not work after arrival Airport car-rental service Confirm the complete price before accepting
Very light luggage and familiarity with Dhaka Local shuttle plus onward transport Multiple steps; no direct service to either neighborhood

Hotel pickup: the simplest handoff

Ask your hotel in Gulshan or Banani to arrange a car before departure. This can be useful after a night flight, for a family or when carrying several bags. Send the hotel your flight number and arrival date, not only the scheduled landing time.

Before confirming, ask:

  • whether the quote is the total for the vehicle;
  • how much waiting time it includes;
  • where the representative will stand and what name will be on the sign;
  • which telephone or messaging number to use after landing;
  • whether payment goes to the hotel or driver; and
  • what happens if the flight is delayed.

Do not assume a hotel’s airport transfer is complimentary. Obtain its price and terms in writing.

Ride-hailing: Uber or Pathao

Uber publishes specific instructions for pickup at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC). It says the app supplies directions to the assigned pickup location after a request; that location may not be at the nearest exit. The app also displays the driver’s name, car colour and registration number. Price depends on the ride type, estimated distance and duration, fees and current demand. Follow the live instructions rather than an old description of a fixed meeting point. See Uber’s current DAC pickup guidance.

Pathao offers Car Lite and Car Plus in Bangladesh, but its public service page does not give DAC-specific pickup directions. Check whether an airport pickup and a suitable car are available in the app after arrival. See Pathao’s current car options.

A workable sequence is:

  1. Connect while collecting baggage. HSIA says free Wi-Fi is available in the baggage-claim area. After customs, the airport lists mobile-SIM shops, banks and currency exchange in front of the green channel, before exits 1 and 2. See the airport’s arrival guide.
  2. Enter the exact destination. Use the hotel or building name and full address—not just “Gulshan” or “Banani.”
  3. Request only when everyone and all bags are ready. Immigration and baggage collection make a request based on landing time unreliable.
  4. Follow the app’s current pickup directions. The closest exit may not lead to the assigned meeting point.
  5. Match the driver and vehicle details before boarding. If anything differs, contact the driver through the app rather than entering the car.
  6. Choose for passengers and bags. Uber says luggage space varies by vehicle and is not guaranteed. Contact the driver after matching if space may be tight.

If both apps work, compare the live offers. Driver proximity, car size and clear pickup directions may matter more than the lowest estimate. A motorcycle is not a practical choice with flight luggage.

Airport car-rental service: the fallback

HSIA’s arrival guide says car-rental services are available in front of the green channel before passengers leave through exits 1 and 2. This provides a fallback before leaving the terminal if an app fails or mobile data is unavailable. Check the official arrivals facilities.

Before handing over luggage, show the complete destination and confirm the total price. Ask whether it includes airport, waiting, parking and other charges, and request a receipt or service contact. This is different from accepting an unsolicited offer after leaving arrivals.

Enter the right part of the neighborhood

A precise destination pin reduces confusion:

  • Banani: include the road number, house or building number, and hotel name.
  • Gulshan: specify Gulshan 1 or Gulshan 2, then add the road number and a named building or hotel.

Save the address, map pin and hotel telephone number offline. If a host sent only a dropped pin, ask for the written address before flying.

Allow for traffic, not just distance

A short map distance does not ensure a short road trip. To illustrate the gap, a 2023 report about a large urban-transport study said a roughly 9km Google Maps trip from the airport to Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan 2 could take as long as 55 minutes. That historical example is not a current estimate or maximum. Read the study summary in The Business Standard.

Check the app’s live estimate after collecting your bags. For an important appointment, allow for immigration, baggage collection, pickup coordination and road delay rather than planning from the scheduled landing time.

Why the airport shuttle is not a direct option

A free airport shuttle launched in July 2026 on three short local links: Airport–Airport Bus Stand, Jasimuddin Intersection–Airport Railway Station, and Kawla–Airport. These connect points around the airport; none continues to Gulshan or Banani. See the announced shuttle routes.

The shuttle therefore still requires an onward road journey. It is most useful when a traveller already understands the local network and has a specific onward plan, rather than as the default airport transfer with luggage.

Before flying

Save:

  • the complete hotel or residence address;
  • its map pin and telephone number;
  • Uber and Pathao, with accounts set up;
  • an offline copy of the booking confirmation; and
  • the airport help numbers: 13600 and 09614-013600, published on the HSIA website.

Choose one primary plan and one backup: hotel car plus ride-hailing, or ride-hailing plus the airport car-rental service. That avoids having to improvise after leaving arrivals.
